Istro-Romanians’ heritages . A comparative analysis
The Istro-Romanians represent today, in the conscience of their contemporaries, the vivid example of the ethnic and demographic dissolution of an old branch, the Romanians. It can easily be noticed that, at a large extent, the cultural practices (believes and attitudes of pre-Christian origin, traditional folk costumes, dances etc.) include strong and significant similarities with the ones met at the North of the Carpathians. Their cultural products have a dominant oral character which made them very perishable and subject to changes throughout the ages; today, few people from the Croatian communities can reproduce poems or songs of their ancestors. The demographic diminishing of the Istro-Romanian communities and the gradual loss of linguistic structures and main traditions place this branch of the Romanians on an irreparable declining trend. In a symbolic way, only the carnivals of the Zvonceari, the folk costumes and the traditional songs remind us of the originality and richness of the bygone celebrations.
