A woman’s roles in the novels of Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu and Virgina Woolf (II ). The Mistress, the Spinster, the Girl-Friend, the Artist
The study deals with the comparative analysis of four ‘secondary’ feminine roles, namely the Mistress, the Spinster, the Girl-Friend and the Artist in the novels of Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu and Virginia Woolf.
Women’s understanding of their new roles led to the creation of more authentic, more credible female characters in the novels of both novelists. The interest of both writers in feminine psychology and physiology, in the sense of feminine sexuality in the modern society leads to the creation of very original and strong characters who express the new status of the woman.
The difference between the two writers, from this point of view, resides in the fact that Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu was a pioneer in the feminine Romanian Literature, creating types of female characters only rarely alluded at before her, whereas Virginia Woolf leans on a strong women writers tradition in the English Literature. What they have in common is the attempt to present a more authentic sense of self by recording experiences of different feminine types in the modern world (approx. 1890-1940).
