Romanian and Polish Sociology During Communism: Evolution at Uneven Bars
Abstract: During the interwar period, both Poland and Romania provided fertile ground for the development of sociology and achieved notable results. However, post-war developments diverged significantly. In Poland, the communist regime was relatively more tolerant of its intellectuals, granting them a minimum level of freedom. Polish sociologists demonstrated professionalism and moral fortitude. Even in the 1960s, Polish sociology maintained connections with the international scientific community and continued to produce significant results. In contrast, Romanian sociology struggled to break free from ideological constraints and isolation. The issue I explored in my analysis was to what extent Romanian sociology could benefit from Polish exceptionalism. Unfortunately, Romanian-Polish ties remained weak, despite both countries sharing similar circumstances under communism. A comparison between two introductory sociology texts circulating in Romania at the beginning of the 1970s—one translated from Polish and the other indigenous—illustrates the differences in attitude and intellectual climate between the two countries. The 1980s and the collapse of socialism further accentuated these differences. While Polish sociologists were sensitive and proactive in supporting and seeking explanations for social demands, Romanian sociologists, despite their willingness, found it increasingly challenging to maintain contact with their Polish counterparts and to respond adequately and effectively to societal crises.
