The Confiscated Self: Surveillance Files and Narrative Restitution in Postcommunist Memoir
Abstract: This study identifies and theorizes a distinct category of post-communist memoir, provisionally termed dosarhie: a hybrid genre that takes shape in explicit dialogue with secret police surveillance dossiers. Drawing on a corpus of nine texts, including works by Dorin Tudoran, Stelian Tănase, Gabriel Liiceanu, Sanda Golpenția, Timothy Garton Ash, Katherine Verdery, Jan Willem Bos, Dennis Deletant, and András Forgách, the article examines how the repressive archive ceases to function as a mere documentary source and becomes instead an active narrative instance capable of generating competing versions of the self. Rather than a straightforward recuperation of suppressed memory, dosarhie emerges as a form of narrative restitution: a mode of writing in which the subject does not simply reconstruct the past, but contests the institutional authority to define it.
