The Village of Șanț Through the Lens of the Camera: A Formal Analysis of The Sociological Documentary Film From 1936
Abstract: The purpose of this article is to explore the positioning of the documentary film Șanț Village (Satul Șanț) within Romanian sociological and ethnographic films, as well as to analyse – from the perspective of the theory and practice of the non-fiction film – the approach of the filmmaking team, the methods and decision-making mechanisms involved in the creation of this referential film in the context of the inter-war period. The film, made during the monographic campaign in 1935 in the village of Șanț, Năsăud County, by Henri H. Stahl and Tudor Posmantir, is part of the Gustian School’s strategy of capitalising on monographic research, and is an example of the innovative (at the time) use of documentary film in the monographic campaigns of Drăguș, Cornova and Șanț.
