Romania and the Triple Alliance’s renew

Romania’s joining to the Triple Alliance was determined by developments in South-Eastern Europe in the early 1880s and especially by Russia’s policy in the South of the Danube.

The tense relations between Romania and Austro-Hungary in the summer of 1883, because of the events in Bulgaria and Russia’s interference in Serbia against King Milan, rushed Romania’s decision.

Finally, Romania joined the Alliance not only in order to get out of its dangerous isolation from 1883, but also with the aim of solving the Danube issue, which had become absolutely crucial, since it could hardly withstand the pressures of the Great Powers. However, the late 19th century and the early 20th century led to a weakening of the position of the Central Powers in South-Eastern Europe.

Thus, it appears that on the eve of the outbreak of World War I, Romania, although a co-signer to an alliance with the Central Powers, was more willing to adhere to the Entente, which in the further evolution of the events will result in the conclusion of the construction of the national unitary state.
