The Global Cultural Retribalization
Abstract: The present study is focused on some recent developments in the relationship between culture and technology. The consequences of unprecedented technological development are directly detectable in the evolution of global culture: individual anguish, existential dilemmas, isolation, they all contribute to a new image of a post-historical culture, ironically situated after post-modernism. At the social level, the development of everyday gadgets, with their functions, conveniences and new meanings, has led to irreversible changes, to deontological dependence, to the reactivation of ancestral communication channels. Following the ideational framework proposed by Foucault, irrationality, or more elegantly put mythical, oral-auditory thought, has been exiled for centuries in madness; through the development of print culture, discourses not accepted by reason have been marginalized. Since modernity, the secularisation of religions has been a phenomenon generated precisely by the supremacy of Reason, of the written word. Myths, conspiracies, pseudo-science, all seem now to be taking their revenge. Reason is being pushed aside by this new and unique medium: the online medium.
