Representations of Carceral Spaces in Post-Communist Romanian Cinema
Amongst the key themes in the post-communist Romanian cinema, the topic of communist prisons was the one which elicited the most virulent anti-communist discourse. In this piece, an analysis of three films – The Earth’s Most Beloved Son, The Afternoon of a Torturer and Arrest – reveals the types of mechanisms that these representations elicit, from the dichotomic portraits of the torturer and the tortured, their distinctive formal construction elements, as well as the ways in which these films relate to theoretical territories of authors such as Michel Foucault and Hannah Arendt.
