Homer՚s Revenge: Ismail Kadare, File on H.
Abstract: Conceived as a fictive replica of the scientific expedition of Milman Parry and Albert Lord, Kadare depicts the journey in Albania of some students at Harvard in order to decipher the system that once gave birth to the antique epics. The Balkan region is the last place which has preserved the oral production of poems in a similar way to the Homeric ones. The young researchers intend to record the lyrics recited by the Albanian rhapsodists and to compare the variants. Their aim is to understand how the system of oral epics diffusion and improvisations bases on preexisting structures function. They want to discover the technology of creating and performing such artistic creations. They want to give an answer to the question of how an epic comes into being. The recording of the ballads helps them to elucidate the epic production system but endangers the whole spontaneous phenomenon of oral creation. The conservation on tape or in writing of the poems might kill their spontaneous and authentic live production.
