Proustianism in Interwar Literary Criticism: The Canon of a Catalytic Author
Abstract: This article examines the reception of Marcel Proust in Romanian interwar literary criticism, focusing on the debate between advocates of literary modernization and defenders of the Balzacian realist tradition. By analyzing literary histories and critical essays by figures such as G. Ibrăileanu, E. Lovinescu, G. Călinescu, Camil Petrescu, Mihail Sebastian, and Eugène Ionesco, it reconstructs the opposition between “Proustians” and “anti-Proustians” and shows how this controversy reflected broader tensions between national specificity and European synchronization. Drawing on recent world literature scholarship, especially Andrei Terian’s concept of the “catalytic author,” the article argues that Proust’s influence on Romanian fiction far exceeded the chronology of translations, reshaping narrative techniques, critical discourse, and the emergence of the psychological novel.
