The Identity Process In Romanian Post-Communism: The Situation Of The Intellectuals (1989-1990)

The present study aims to observe the procedures and mannerisms of the intellectual discourse in the early years of Romanian transition. The departing conjecture of this analysis is that 1990 has irreversibly changed the perception of culture itself, and subsequently the mission of the intellectual and of literature in society, polarizing thus the new forms of public debate. The article uses as raw material the issues of the magazine “România literară” in 1989-1990 to find the major turning points in the shift of the cultural discourse – as this magazine is usually considered a representative sample of the Romanian literary environment.

Keywords: Romanian post-Communism, Romanian literature in post-Communism, “România literară”, Romanian transition, public cultural discourse, cultural wars.
