Rezumat
A Unique School: The Queen Marie Institute for the Blind and Deaf-Mute in Cernăuți
Abstract: The Queen Marie Institute for the Blind and Deaf-Mute in Cernăuți represents a revealing case study for the history of education for children with disabilities and for disability within the broader social and political context of interwar Romania. Its history illustrates approaches to pedagogical and economic challenges that differed from those adopted by most similar institutions in the rest of the country. This analysis is offered as a counter-model to the options that were not pursued by other teachers, local authorities, and communities in Romania regarding the education of children with disabilities. The role of persons with disabilities in building and maintaining the institute represents a unique element in the Romanian interwar context.
