Ioana Popescu, Documentarea vizuală monografică, de la „Tipuri” la Țărani
The Monographic visual documentation, from ”Types” to Peasants
The article examines a major turning point introduced in social research practice by Dimitrie Gusti’s monographic program of visual documentation. The author argues that the monographic research program entailed an aesthetic that was new relative to the one mobilized by prior research. The visual information (that is, both photographs and filmed footage) gathered by the predecessors of the Gustian school displayed a certain Romantic sensibility, which drew on the ruin trope and the beautiful costume as part of an attempt to come up with a set of cultural types. In opposition to that, the monographic research was guided by direct observation and prioritized the documentation of everyday life. Due to that, the visual data gathered – based on empathy, social mobilization and the intimate knowledge of the subjects – became far more powerful.
