Introduction: Managing Memory. A Heritage and Its Interrogation
Abstract: Before the modernist invention of the self, memoirs produced collective memories: national, generational, regional. The diarist, the memoirist did not merely recount an individual experience, but crafted a message on behalf of a community that they constructed in the process. Therefore, the study of these texts must include, in addition to a literary perspective, an ideological and historical component. This special issue, drawing on the research project titled Encycplopedia of Romanian Memoir Writing, currently undertaken by the Romanian Philology Institute „Alexandru Philippide” in Iași and bringing together a wide array of Romanian researchers, seeks to answer several key questions: How should the heritage of literary and national memory be managed? Does the excessive aestheticization of reception distort the understanding of historical, political, and ideological phenomena, since the author is an involved witness and has a clear agenda? What are the requirements for researching politically connoted memory? Can the study of memoir writing separate itself from the mission of “methodological nationalism” to protect a fragile, inert, and voiceless heritage from hostile interpretations? The unprofessional manner in which memoirs were returned after the fall of the communist regime contributed over time to the establishment of civic, political, and ethical models that led to the revitalization of right-wing extremism in the cultural and academic fields and, more broadly, in society. The contributions to this issue highlight several ways in which corpora of memoir writing from the literary and other national traditions may be used productively to extract civically and scientifically valid results in an increasingly challenging environment.
