„Inexprimabil” & „sugestie”: genealogia unor concepte doar aparent eminamente simboliste

“The Ineffable” & “Suggestion”: The Genealogy of Two Concepts Only Apparently Inherently Symbolist
Abstract: This study traces a genealogy of the concepts of “suggestion” and “the inexpressible” (“l’inexprimable”) generally associated with the theory of Symbolism, the literary and artistic movement that emerged in the 1880s in the Francophone world. The study shows, however, that precursors to these concepts can be found centuries earlier. In the fields of literary history and the history of cultural discourse, they can be identified in the aesthetics of brevity, from French classicism to the (pre-)Enlightenment authors, along a winding line that connects Montesquieu, Voltaire, Kant, and others to writers and philosophers of art and writing such as E.A. Poe, Paul Verlaine, Arthur Rimbaud, Stéphane Mallarmé, Émile Hennequin, and others. At the same time, the study also investigates extra-literary discourse, the philosophical and scientific foundations—from the hard sciences to psychology, sociology, and so on—on which “suggestion” in particular develops or with which it intersects. The approach is comparative and interdisciplinary, with international sources being corroborated by modern Romanian authors, particularly post-Romantics literary critics such as Titu Maiorescu, C. Dobrogeanu-Gherea, E. Lovinescu, and N. Davidescu. Last but not least, this genealogical journey offers the opportunity to highlight certain definitions of poetry where the influence of classical rhetoric meets (is confirmed by) scenarios inspired by the sciences, such as the vision of poetry as concentrated discourse, of finite linguistic materiality but with infinite semantic potential.
