Guillermo Cabrera Infante, Three Trapped Tigers: The Obsession of Literature
Almost unanimously considered one of the most important writers of the entire 20th century, the Cuban Guillermo Cabrera Infante always tried to innovate within his literary creations. The book he published in 1965, Three Trapped Tigers, considered by some interpreters a novel and by the others an exquisite example of a cycle of short stories
connected through some major motifs or characters, represents even nowadays a constant challenge to the literary critics. The text constantly experiments at the linguistic and symbolic level, describing the Cuban capital, Havana, in a way unparalleled since, and also puts into question great literature of the previous centuries, from the masterpiece
of Cervantes to Sterne’s Tristram Shandy, in order to prove its ability to include the reader into the intricate world of the text.
Keywords: Latin American fiction, contemporary novel, Cuban literature, cultural tradition, innovative narrative strategy.
