Gregor von Rezzori and Bukovina: A Brief Exercise in Gastronomy and Politics
Abstract: Part of a broader research project aiming to reconstruct the history of Bukovina through gastronomy (recovered via memoirs, correspondence, documents, autobiographical fiction, journals, recollections, official reports, or ethnographic studies), the present study seeks to analyze Bukovinian cuisine through the work of Gregor von Rezzori. Alongside his memoirs and fictional works that directly or allegorically reconstruct interwar Bukovina, the study also draws on a collection of recipes written by Rezzori himself, preserved in his personal archive. Accordingly, the study brings to light some of the dishes that could have been consumed by a high-ranking Austrian official, a passionate hunter, in a multiethnic and multiconfessional environment. At the same time, it reconstructs the socio-moral atmosphere of interwar Bukovina, addressing themes such as antisemitism, colonization, and the identity crisis of Austrians from a former imperial province. The study also investigates the period during which the recipe collection was written, by associating it with Rezzori’s literary works, and proposes premises for an analysis of his poetics, grounded in the idea of transfiguring memories into text.
