George Orwell in the Romanian Press During the Communist Period
Abstract: The present study examines various articles published in the press during Romania’s communist era that mention George Orwell, focusing on how different writers or magazines captured his intellectual activity. Depending on the year and the objectives of the articles, a quantitative and qualitative classification emerges, highlighting an evolution in the way Orwell was received, shaped by the social, political, and economic factors of the time. Given that Orwell was often used as a symbol of the West, particular emphasis is placed on the ideas circulated in the articles in which he appears, even though many of his works and activities were omitted in the media. By the end of the study, the factors that influenced how Orwell was perceived and criticized between 1984 and 1989—whether as a writer or as a representative of Western ideology—are brought to light.
