Editor’s Note: Programmatic Texts of Emerging Comparative Literature in the First International Journal of Comparative Literary Studies
Abstract: The first international journal of comparative literature, Acta Comparationis Litterarum Universarum, occupies a distinctive and pioneering position in the history of global comparative literary studies. Nevertheless, a number of essential facts and connections regarding the journal remain absent from international scholarship, including its foundational programmatic texts. For this reason, the present compilation offers the original versions and translations of five key programmatic writings published in the journal. The linguistic diversity of these texts strikingly illustrates both the multilingualism of the founders and of the journal itself, while their content sheds light on several methodological questions and dilemmas of early comparative literature that remain relevant today. It was a deliberate decision to translate these programmatic texts not only into major world languages but also into several of the languages spoken in the region of Transylvania, where the founding editors were based—including one of the contemporary standard varieties of Romani, a language of particular significance to the journal. In doing so, our aim was symbolically to reintegrate the journal both into the ideal of a multilingual glocal comparatism it once envisioned.
