Romanian-German Collaborations of the Bucharest Sociological School: The Socio-Demographer Helmut Haufe (1906-1943) in Romania

Abstract: Between 1930-1936, the young German sociologist Helmut Haufe (1906-1943) carried out fieldwork and documentation in Romania. He participated in the field research of the Sociological School in Bucharest as a visitor and then as a Rockefeller fellow, researching the social organization and the customary law of the Romanian people. This research resulted in sociological studies and articles, which he published in the following years until 1940. Haufe was an assistant of the university professor Gunther Ipsen (1899-1984), who was a central figure in the scientific movement known as the “Leipzig School of Sociology” in the 1920s and then in Nazi sociology. This reflected the perspective from which Haufe approached his research. The present paper traces the context of Haufe’s scientific training, his activity in Romania and his sociological conception, as reflected in his works. Finally, we briefly refer to Haufe’s participation in the 14th International Congress of Sociology in Bucharest (1939).
