“A Far-Reaching Game Has Been Started…”: An Unpublished Interview from 1991 with Professor Henri H. Stahl
Abstract: The unpublished interview with Professor Henri H. Stahl (1901-1991), brilliant representative of Romanian sociology from the last century, was conducted in the year of his death. Evaluating the political situation one year and three months after the December 1989 events, the professor estimated that after 40 years of the communist regime, the new authorities were not prepared for an effective transition to a market economy. In order to correctly see the transition tasks, the sociologist believed that in order to solve local Romanian problems, global developments must be taken into account. Therefore, sociological research must also aim at this correlation. From the pertinent and original analysis of the situation in the spring of 1991, many predictions have been confirmed by time, including the reasons for the tense developments in Eastern Europe.
