The Passageway Areas in the Sacred Space of the Church. Iconographical Themes
This paper aims to present the research results concerning the church painting of the entrance and passage portals. I analysed the place of the iconographic subjects and their possible role in this area. The results are based on the study of Moldavian churches that were built and painted during the reigns of Stephen the Great and Petru Rares (century).
The entrance portal of the church acts as the border between the profane exterior space and the sacred interior one, as in Mircea Eliade’s view. Through a series of factors such as architecture, iconography, and ritual, the interior of the church becomes a space with sacred value.
Passing through the portals and through the successive rooms of the church that carry a progressive sense of sacredness suggests the idea of a ‘passage’ from the exterior to the interior. This ‘passage’ is highlighted by the interior architecture and the iconography of each room and portal area.
