Zarifopol and his place
The present article reviews Andreea Mironescu´s book, Afacerea clasicilor. Paul Zarifopol şi critica modernităţii (Tracus Arte, 2014), a monograph on the life and work of one of the best pre- and inter-war Romanian literary critics, almost inexplicably absent in contemporary discussions on Romanian literature. The review shows that what Andreea Mironescu attains in her apt monograph is not simply the best discussion of Zarifopol´s work in our whole critical literature – but a profound interogation of the Romanian cultural identity.
Keywords: modern and contemporary Romanian literature, history of Romanian literary criticism, pre- and interwar Romanian literature, Romanian cultural identity, Paul Zarifopol, Andreea Mironescu
