The small-sized woodcuts in an Akathist of Bucharest (1823, 1828)

This study is intended to discuss the authorship of 34 xylographs which decorate the elegant Akathist printed at Bucharest in two editions: 1823, 1828. Most of them are supposed to have been produced by Simeon Ierei, and some others by Ghervasie Monah. Even if the two xylographers had appealed to Ukrainian models for several times, they accomplished illustrations of a high artistic value, as they creatively assimilated different elements and procedures from the Romanian and European area. More than once can one encounter themes scarcely approached in the art of Byzantine tradition.

Keywords: Bucharest, Kiev, Akathist, woodcuts, Simeon Ierei (Popa Simeon), Ghervasie Monah
