Female identity formation: from the pathological image to the autonomous I using the example of the protagonist from Marielouise Janssen-Jurreit’s novel ” Das Verbrechen der Liebe in der Mitte Europas” [”The crime of love in the heart of Europe”]
The novel Das Verbrechen der Liebe in der Mitte Europas [The crime of love in the heart of Europe] by Marie Louise Janssen-Jurreit presents a German-Polish love story, eight years before the fall of the Iron Curtain. This love story is associated with a journey into the past to traumatic family secrets. The passionate struggle for love doesn’t want to be defeated by historical facts and political and ideological confrontations. The action of the novel begins in 1981 and covers an interweaving of love, contemporary history and wounds caused by the National Socialism and Leninism / Stalinism. In the center of the action is a protagonist who is on the search for identity and is undergoing a process of self-rediscovery. The present paper aims to follow the identity formation of the main figure, from a pathological phase at the beginning to an autonomous I at the end of the novel. Aspects of cultural feminism, psychoanalysis and feminist therapy were used as theoretical basis.
