Vasile Aaron – a rediscovered writer

Vasile Aaron (1780-1821) had an important contribution to the modernization of the Romanian literature. He was a representative of the Transylvanian Enlightenment School. He gave us the first translation of Aeneid, a masterpiece of Antiquity and he did this
work while he was very young, in 1805. Although it contains imperfections, this work is remarkable for the fluency of the text, for the picturesque of some descriptions, for the dramatic characters he presented, and, last but not least, for his talent as a
versifier. The complete studies written by Liliana Popa and Nicolae Popa shed light upon one of the most prominent writers of those times.

Keywords: Vasile Aaron, Pre-Romantic Age, Enlightenment, Aeneid, translation, lexical innovation.
