Versions of Biographical Truth: The Memoirs of Eugène Ionesco
Abstract: The present paper represents an analysis of the memoir and diary writings of Eugen Ionescu, refering to both the Romanian texts and those written in French, specifically Nu, continuing with Scrisori din Paris published in Viața Românească in 1940. The author established in his Romanian years the essential themes and the structure of the confessional-essayistic discourse revealing his aesthetic choices and his value judgements. The later Franch-language diaries and his memoir narratives further develop the autor’s desire to approximate a personal truth, which involves identifying and exploring various versions of the truth. For the author, paradox has a central function, as it is used to filter and interpret reality. The author is also motivated by an obsession with authenticity, common to most of his contemporaries.
