An European spirit in the Romanian culture: Ilie E. Toroutiu
Having been educated as a genuine humanities person in the Austrian educational system from Bucovina, I.E. Torouţiu (1888-1953) was one of the most vigorous personalities that have contributed to the integration of the Romanian spirituality into the European cultural heritage. Brought up into a multicultural climate, he was a passionate defender of the Romanian cultural identity. However, he did not deny or neglect the values created by his fellow countrymen belonging to other 11 ethnic groups and 9 religious denominations. A great connoisseur of the lives and the work of German geniuses, he was a true ambassador of the German culture in a Romania of Francophiles. Thus, he contributed not only to a better understanding of the German culture’s sensitivity, strictness and vigor in the Romanian environment, but also to a more accurate perception of the Romanian psychology in the German world.
