Abstract: Focusing on the Polish literary field and on Romanian literature in Polish translation, this article distinguishes literary criticism from translation criticism, arguing that the latter is indispensable to cultivating a culture of translation and, when attentive to linguistic, cultural, and sociopolitical dimensions, capable of foregrounding vulnerabilities characteristic of small literatures: a limited pool of specialists and translators, the scarcity of (re)translations, restricted possibilities for verifying translations against source texts, and heightened susceptibility to the manipulative dynamics of rewriting.
Keywords: translation criticism, Romanian literature in Poland, literary reception, rewriting, world literature, book market.
