Sociological Translations in Romania in the ’60s and ’70s

Abstract: The article follows the dynamics of translations of sociological works in the years of revaluation of sociology in Romania, starting with 1959 and going until 1980. During this period, the role of translations went from that of preparing the general public to receive an activity that had been blamed and forbidden for a long time, to that of providing training material for the new generations of specialists in sociology. Translations have also contributed to the development of sociological language in Romanian. The second part of the article is based on interviews with people who were involved in the publication of sociology translations during the period. The interviews highlighted the motivation for making and publishing the translations. The hypothesis that there was any strategy followed by the authorities regarding the provision of translations was refuted. The proliferation of translations seems to be linked only to a spiritual climate among a part of the cultural elite to move closer to the directions given by the West. The obstacles coming from the authorities through censorship and insufficient allocation of resources have meant that many areas of sociology remain uncovered with translations and many fundamental texts of the discipline remain few known and difficult to access for Romanian speakers.

Key words: revaluation of sociology, sociological language, institutional obstacles, cultural climate, motivation for translation
