Deaf under the Communist Regime: Nine Narrativized Life Histories
Abstract:This contribution presents nine narrativized life histories of deaf individuals who lived in Romania during the communist regime. Based on interviews with older members of the deaf community from different Romanian cities, the text brings together their memories of childhood, education, work, community life, and the transition from communism to the post-1989 period. The narratives highlight shared experiences shaped by limited educational opportunities, labour, and the social role of deaf associations. At the same time, they reveal forms of marginalization and discrimination encountered in everyday life. By foregrounding personal memories, these life histories contribute to recovering the largely overlooked historical experiences of Romania’s deaf community.
Keywords: deaf history, communism, Romania, oral history, disability history.
