Alternatives of city description as urban history
The article reviews Zoltán Rostás’s anthology book on the “other interwar Bucharest’s” social life, as described in the writings of some Gustian sociologists. The review highlights the particularities of this perspective (sociological, not sentimental; observative, not retrospective) and how it is appropriately reflected in the organization of such an anthology (factual, not normative; documental, not interpretive). It attempts to explain, firstly, the role and relevance of this method, meant to reconsider and reconstruct a past sociological knowledge; and, secondly, the role and relevance of the concept of “other” for understanding the city and a past historical period.
