The following text represents an annotated translation of a letter sent by Fyodor Mikhailovici Dostoevsky to Apollon Nikolaevici Maikov (1821 – 1897), poet and translator, one of the great writer’s closest friends. The letter is peculiarly important both because it has never been translated into Romanian and because it accurately presents the social context in Russia of the 1870s and the artistic and moral problems Dostoevsky was dealing with in those troublesome years. The translator, Dr. Leonte Ivanov, collaborates with one of the most important Romanian publishing houses, preparing a selection of Dostoevsky’s letters (more than 1300) which is to be published soon.
