Philip E. Mosely and the Sociological School Of Bucharest: A Half Century Friendship

Abstract: Philip E. Mosely is well-known as one of the founding fathers of Sovietology, co-founder of the Russian Institute at Columbia University, Policy Analyst for the State Department, Director of studies for the Council of Foreign Relations and Director of the European Institute at Columbia University. However, it is less known the fact that Philip Mosely did his apprenticeship as a rural sociologist with the Sociological School of Bucharest in the mid-1930s and his worldview was enriched by his experience in Romania. The main goal of this article is to present in a systematic way Mosely long-lasting intellectual friendship with some Romanian sociologists from 1935 to 1972, based on recent archival discoveries.

Key words: Cercetare monografică, Şanţ, Dimitrie Gusti, Philip Mosely, Sovietologie
