The inhabitants of the HoSpital in Sibiu, in the 18th century
The study is based on the three lists with the inmates of the Hospital in Sibiu. One list is undated and the others are dated 1766 and 1773. The lists gathered general information (age, place of birth, the name and husband occupation), the social status of the inmates: the occupation in the Hospital and the aids from community.
The younger inmate is 18 years old and the oldest was 104 years. There are a lot of poor families, a soldiers’ widow and many widows of handicraftsmen. We can observe the evolution of some families: many of the women survived and the children left the Hospital. We have, also, information about the rooms of the building, the diseases and debility of the inmates. In fact, the list is a glimpse of the town society in the second half of the 18th century when the emigrants increased the poverty.
