Homeland, with a View from Exile
Abstract: Memoir writing, which is today the main form of self-literature, is even more relevant when it reflects exceptional circumstances experienced by the authors of the texts. The identity strategies employed in memoirs are tools of power, as they establish the prestige of the authors. However, reading also has a degree of intentionality that cannot be ignored. The way we construct our sense of otherness through reading the memoirs of others (which we evaluate precisely because we relate to them, even if only for counter-identification, thus including them in our reference group) speaks about us perhaps even more than how we imagine our own identity. Texts that are genuinely born from a state of crisis require a heavily contextualized reading; this is also the case with memoir literature, especially the memoirs of exile. In this article, I have examined various theories on Romanian (mainly political) exile, periodization, and thematic segments. Comparisons can help us understand the deep mechanisms of exile as a cultural and socio-political phenomenon that has been increasingly present on the European scene since the 19th century (with a peak in the latter half of the 20th century, as far as the Romanian exile is concerned). I have proposed certain delimitations, guided mainly by qualitative, substantial, and individualistic criteria. The conclusions highlighted the complexity of the subject matter and the need for interpretation to recover at least something from the unique perspective of each exiled author on their homeland. That is, a view from exile.
