A Possible Short History of Public Illumination in Sibiu
The present article tries to present a short history of electricity and publicand private lighting. We can share out local lighting history in two distinct parts, themedieval years and the modern years. In the Medieval years we can speak about a civilaspect pf the local public lighting. The neighborhoods inside the medieval fortress werethe ones who took care of the public lighting. In 1760 there already night-watchers indifferent local streets. The important date in the public lighting evolution is 1817, whenemperor Franz I visited Sibiu. The Magistrate decided to light all the streets of Sibiuthorough his visit. In 1837 it became permanent and in 1895 it became electric. Beforethe Second World War, Sibiu has 76% percentage of the city covered by public lighting,becoming so one of the most important examples of Romanian public lighting. Thepublic lighting in Sibiu modernize itself thorough the past century.
