A Metaphor of Form in 1863: mărgăritărelele [“little pearls”]
The article remakes the history of an aesthetic representation, that is, to mărgăritărelele (meaning both “little pearls” and “lily of the valley”), the title given by Vasile Alecsandri to a cycle of poems published in 1863. As a metaphor of form, this image is rooted on a double tradition. On the one hand, it drives back to the European cultural heritage, chiefly to the Renaissance florilegia of commonplaces (which actually were published under the title marguerites), on the other, a folkloric tradition, which employs “the string of pearls” as a trope, in order to represent an indeterminate advance of narration. Through its connotations, the metaphorization of literary forms opened the possibility for a new appreciation of literary works, which meant privileging fragmentarianism, de-contextualization, and freedom of interpretation. My analysis is trying to define the role of this representation in the dis-coupling of aesthetic from contingent experiences as well as in the emancipation of the “pure” values of beauty from those of down-to-earth life, in the context a Romanian culture that, around 1860, was striving to establish an autonomous field for art.
