Proper Nouns: Revaluations and Revisals

The study presents the main directions regarding the proper nouns’ analysis, resuming the theories about the proper nouns’ semantic void, inititated by Stuart Mill and reengaged by Kripke, as well as the theories about the proper nouns’ nuclear meaning and those about the “proper nouns rich in meaning”, elaborated by Bertrand Russel and continued by Frege, Wittgenstein, Searle, Strawson; the conception of classic semantics and denotative relation is confuted by the minimal cratylist fund and restrained mimology, and referential semantics by the adoption of interpretative semantics; one finally presents a topic of the onomastics within the novels, the meaning of the name changing from genesis to redaction and then during the reading.
Keywords: classic semantics, referential semantics, motivation, referential chain, inherent sem, afferent sem, theory of direct reference, descriptivist theory, topic
