Proto-Hypertextual Narratives in Romanian Literature: Tudor Arghezi, “Tablets from Kuty Country” (II)

Abstract: This two-part study explores the (proto-)hypertextual dynamics in Tablete din Țara de Kuty [Tablets from Kuty Country], an “unusual” narrative published in 1933 by Romanian author Tudor Arghezi. Starting from the Dadaist concept of “indetermination” and searching the roots of the more contemporary narrative “interactivity” in the process, my research delves into the reasons why Tablete din Țara de Kuty can be classified as a proto-hypertext. This second part is a reading experiment that tries to “verify” Arghezi’s claims in the Foreword, that the book can be read in any order. Thus, one of the readings takes the chapters of the book in chronological order, and the other in an order randomly generated by random.org.

Keywords: Romanian fiction, hypertext fiction, proto-hypertextual narrative, Tudor Arghezi, Julio Cortázar.
