Mortem terribilem. Gothic Death
In the present study, we tried to capture what we found relevant for the imagery of the Gothic Death. The selection of texts and images significant for the Romanian imagery of Death proved a subjective and challenging process. We have focused on those sources with a cultural career, sources that have inspired and have been faithfully disseminated or metamorphosed according to the various historical contexts. The imagery of Death in Romanian culture is less fertile than its manifestations in other cultures, particularly if we refer to the representations of the Gothic Death.
In scholarly culture, literature, and art, this imagery exploded during La Belle Époque and, after the First World War, in the interwar period. Relative cultural synchronicity and the collective trauma caused by the Great Carnage, encouraged avant-garde, modernist exercises. For a short time and sometimes tangentially, local sensibilities and
representations related to Death seem similar to those in the Western culture. Post-communist Romanian cinema also explores, fearfully, the registers of the horror cinema culture. We aim to reveal the most remarkable images of the terrible Death in Romanian literature and cinema.
