Rezumat
Funeral Moments in Wallachia – Narrative Discourse and Effigy
Medieval and pre-modern charters and chronicles detail the conjunctions in which the pious attitude and action taken through liturgical service and prayers of the living become premises for the redemption of the deceased’s souls. These testimonies reveal that the perpetuation of devotion was ensured by funerary monuments by means of both image and text, which preserve the pious deeds of the dead in the memory of posterity. Many questions arise with reference to the relationship between the inscription and the iconography of the burial monument, the ways of legitimating memory through funeral and commemorative inscriptions, the typology and the function of the memorial monument. The study addresses the image and the text of the eulogium of funeral slabs in 16th century Wallachia that can be addressed and elucidated not only by analyzing the epigraphical form, or the iconography of the burial monument, but also by the detecting the relationship between the monument’s text and its iconographic image.
