The Practice of „Book Opening” and the Challenge of Understanding Reflexes of Autochthonous Ethnology

The target of the present article is twofold. On the one side, it challenges Romanian ethnology to rethink one of its most used conceptual tools: the opposition popular/official religion. Its hierarchical/discriminative content, its theological origin, and its narrow perspective over both the object and the method of Ethnology are only some of the problems caused by its usage. As an alternative, I argue here for the adequacy of Leonard Primiano’s concept of vernacular religion, which dissolves the opposition and opens a much wider, non-polemic perspective over the religious phenomenon. On the other side, from the angle of vernacular religion, it offers an ethnological analysis (with special emphasis on the sociological and psychological implications) of one of the most neglected and most complicated Romanian religious practices which galvanizes the local religious field.
