Coins Of The 12th And 13th Centuries Discovered In Churchyard Cemeteries From Southern Transylvania

The goal of the paper is to provide an inventory and an analysis of the coins discovered in archaeological excavation of churchyard cemeteries from southern Transylvania. The paper revealed the presence or absence of the deposit custom of the coins as obolus in some cemeteries. At this stage of research, in the churchyard cemeteries attributed to the Transylvanian Saxons were discovered 23 arpadian coins and 1 byzantine coin. What stands out is that on the one hand the coins from Geza II and Stephen III prevail in the graves of the 12th century and on the other hand the absence of the coins in the graves of the 13th century. The paper reviews the coins, which were discovered in the cemeteries from Drăuşeni, Feldioara and Sibiu, and offers a new interpretation.

Keywords: Coins, Graveyard, Transylvanian Saxon, the 12th and 13th Centuries
