Once more, Saussure: The speech circuit in open space
Abstract: The speech circuit described by Ferdinand de Saussure is often and unduly labelled as simplistic or otherwise deficient in great part of the subsequent interpretations of the Course in General Linguistics by students, editors, translators and scientists. A more critical and impartial reading would underline Saussure’s stance on the matter and confirm that his intellectual legacy forms a cornerstone which has been concretized, reshaped and revived by the future, even in areas detached from linguistics, but echoing the same sound logic and visionary insights. Such a parallel, at first glance surprising, may be found in the field of engineering, namely the bold Voyager program which launched a “message in the bottle” in open space.
