Ioan Slavici journalist and prisoner in Central and Eastern Europe

Ioan Slavici is probably the most important publicist of Romanian language. Diversity characterized the journalist Ioan Slavici’s activity, coupled with a good organizational ability and an immense work capacity. It is obvious that the Transylvanian journalist was involved in the debates of ideas (political), criticizing and offering solutions, something which particularly irritated both the Romanian leaders (from the “Kingdom”, but also from Transylvania and Banat), and the Hungarian government representatives. He led his debates with dignity, without allowing himself to be intimidated. In this context, he will serve time in jail. First, he was tried and condemned to one year in jail, by the Hungarian authorities. Later, he would spend 11 months behind bars, this time due to the authorities from Bucharest.
Keywords: Ioan Slavici, journalist, prisoner, Central and Eastern Europe, political ideas
