Marguerite Yourcenar’s Translators in Romania: From the History of Reception
to Paratextual Discourse
Abstract: Our study will focus primarily on analyzing the paratextual material accompanying Romanian translations of the works (novels, essays, and memoirs) of Marguerite Yourcenar (1903–1987). The first section will offer a review of Romanian translations of Yourcenar’s writings (during and after the communist period). The second section will provide an opportunity to study the prefaces, forewords, and postscripts written by the translators (Mihai Gramatopol – Memoriile lui Hadrian, 1983; Angela Cismaş – Labirintul lumii: Amintiri pioase. Arhive ale Nordului, 1986; and Petru Creția – Creierul negru al lui Piranesi şi alte eseuri, 1996). They seem to fully embrace their mission as translators and interpreters of Yourcenar’s work, being “her first readers” and meticulously reflecting on the impact of Yourcenar’s texts on the Romanian public through their translation work.
