Lamartine’s Voyage to the Orient: The Christian Poet and the Temptation of Syncretism
The journey of Lamartine to the Orient was crucial for the poet as well as for the future political man and thinker Lamartine. The wish to reach the Orient -a permanent wish for the spirit – materialized itself in a journey during which he lost his daughter but with the help of which he discovered the traces of God on Earth and began to think about the uniqueness of the Being and of the World, a philosophical foundation of a possible union of civilizations and of a religious syncretism.
