The body in medieval theatre
Abstract: The representation of the body varies according to genre, for aesthetic and ideological reasons. For example, the body in the chanson de geste is not that of the novel, nor that of hagiography. Depending on what does the representation of the body vary? Not depending on the individual. Generally speaking, the notion of the individual is not relevant to the character in the literature of the Middle Ages. The medieval character comes close to the idea of type, of function, in short he embodies a general reality which is always beyond the individual. Lexically, the word cors means body and person in old French. The double meaning of the word lends itself to ambiguities: it is difficult to specify to what extent it only signifies the physique of the character, to what extent it is the legal person or both at the same time. I will discuss a few pieces of religious theatre before moving on to comical theatre, notably some farces.
