«L’Africain c’est moi» Récit de voyage et récit de vie chez J.M.G. Le Clézio
« The Africain is me ». Travel narrative et life narrative at J.M.G. Le Clézio
This article investigates the ways in which J.M.G. Le Clézio creates the portrait of his father in the autobiographical work L’Africain (The African), published in 2004. The voyage reveals its power in the discovery not only of a new world (Africa) but also of a new self. The intricate relations to this “strange”, “distant” and extremely authoritative paternal figure are constantly revisited. The sense of freedom, the new perceptions, the adventures that the narrator describes and experiences offer a sudden change of perspectives and attitudes. The portrait of the father could also be interpreted as a sort of disguised self-portrait of the writer who discovers and exposes himself during the process of literary creation.
